Strategic Key Takeaways for UK Manufacturers

Identify the Intent: Use films for external transit, liquids for internal geometries, and paper for fast-acting interleaving during production.

Match the Chemistry: Not all VCI is the same. Ensure your packaging is specifically formulated for your metal type, whether it’s ferrous (steel/iron) or non-ferrous (copper/aluminium).

Prioritise Sustainability: With European environmental standards tightening, adopting landfill biodegradable film or recyclable options is no longer just “nice to have”—it’s a compliance necessity.

Control the Environment: VCI is most effective on clean, dry surfaces. Ensure parts are free of fingerprints and acidic residues before wrapping.

In the high-stakes world of European manufacturing, rust isn’t just a minor technical nuisance—it’s a silent thief of profit. Whether you are transporting precision automotive components through the salty air of the English Channel or mothballing heavy machinery in a damp warehouse in the West Midlands, the integrity of your metal assets is constantly under siege.

Traditional oils and messy greases? They’re relics of a bygone industrial era. Today, Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) have completely rewritten the protective playbook. But here’s the rub: with an array of formats including films, liquids, and papers, how do you actually pick the right shield for your specific workflow?

The Science of the “Invisible Shield”

VCI technology doesn’t merely “cover” a part like a standard plastic wrap. Instead, it involves a sophisticated molecular release. These specialised molecules migrate from the packaging material into the surrounding enclosure, forming an invisible, monomolecular layer on the metal surface. This layer acts as a barrier, halting the electrochemical reaction of oxidation before it can even begin.

As Karen Clements, Director of Global Marketing at Daubert Cromwell, puts it:

“Effective corrosion prevention isn’t just about covering a part; it’s about creating a controlled environment where the chemistry does the heavy lifting. Parts should arrive clean, dry, and ready for immediate use—no degreasing required.”

The “Big Three” Breakdown: Which One Wins?

1. VCI Films: The Versatile Heavyweight

When it comes to corrosion protection plastics, VCI film is the undisputed heavyweight champion for dispatch. It provides a two-in-one benefit: a robust physical barrier against dust and moisture, combined with active chemical prevention.

Best For: Overseas transit and long-term pallet storage where puncture resistance is non-negotiable.

The Green Shift: UK manufacturers are pivoting fast toward sustainable VCI films and recycled VCI film to mitigate the impact of the UK Plastic Packaging Tax.

Performance Pick: Premium Metalguard is engineered for high-strength durability, ensuring it won’t tear during the rigours of dockside loading.

2. VCI Liquids: For Complex Internal Geometries

Sometimes, a bag or a sheet of paper just won’t cut it. For engine internals, gearboxes, or complex piping systems, VCI liquids are the premier choice. These products act as a vapour phase rust inhibitor, effectively “creeping” into recessed areas and blind holes where solid packaging simply cannot reach. They are often used as “fogging” agents or final-stage rinses according to ISO 9223 standards for atmospheric corrosivity.

3. VCI Paper: The Rapid-Response Specialist

If you need an immediate “burst” of protection on a busy shop floor, VCI paper is unparalleled for its speed of saturation.

How it Works: Paper provides a high surface area for VCI molecules to volatilise quickly, making it ideal for rapid packaging cycles.

Best For: Interleaving between flat components or lining the interior of wooden crates.

Industry Gold Standard: For ferrous metals, Mastershield is the go-to, while Powershield remains the #1 choice for multi-metal protection.

FAQ: Navigating Modern Anti-Corrosion Solutions

Q: Can I double up by using VCI film and paper together?
Absolutely. In fact, for brutal humidity or high-value exports, tossing a VCI paper insert inside a VCI bag creates a dual-layer safety margin that is difficult to beat.

Q: Will VCI residues mess with my sensitive electronics?
Generally, no. Specialised ESD films are designed to handle static discharge and rust simultaneously without leaving the gummy, conductive residues associated with traditional oils.

Q: How long does this protection actually last?
When stored in a properly sealed environment, corrosion protection packaging can keep components in pristine, “factory-fresh” condition for anywhere from 6 months to over 2 years.

Q: Is “sustainable” VCI as effective as the original?
Yes. Modern Bionatur products are engineered to meet the same rigorous protection standards as virgin plastics, ensuring you don’t have to sacrifice performance for the sake of the planet.

Audit Your Polymers: Ensure your VCI films are “mono-materials” to avoid PPWR penalties.

Verify Certifications: Look for EN 13432 if you are claiming compostability.

Safety First: Confirm your inhibitors are Nitrite-free to stay ahead of TRGS 615 updates.

The Countdown to August 12

In the European manufacturing sector, 2026 is defined by a single acronym: PPWR. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation isn’t just another layer of red tape; it’s a fundamental redesign of how we move metal across borders. With the August deadline fast approaching, the “Corrosion Conversation” in Europe has shifted from simple rust prevention to legal market access.

If your VCI packaging isn’t proven to be recyclable or doesn’t meet the new “Design for Recycling” (DfR) criteria, your shipments risk being turned away at the border or hit with significant “Plastic Taxes.”

The Move to Mono-Materials

Historically, high-performance VCI films were often complex, multi-layer laminates. While effective at stopping rust, these “multi-materials” are a nightmare for European recycling streams. In 2026, the trend has decisively moved toward Recyclable VCI mono-polymers.

By using a single polymer base (like PE) infused with our proprietary Mastershield or Premium Metalguard formulations, Daubert Europe provides a solution that is 100% recyclable within existing EU infrastructure. It’s the “Holy Grail” of 2026 logistics: high-level protection that satisfies the circular economy mandates of the Green Deal.

Beyond REACH: The German TRGS 615 Factor

While PPWR handles the “outside” of the package, REACH and TRGS 615 govern the “inside.” For our partners in the German automotive hub—BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and their Tier-1 suppliers—occupational safety is paramount.

Using TRGS 615 compliant corrosion protection is no longer a “nice-to-have.” It is a requirement for protecting workers from hazardous nitrosamines. Our latest Nitrite-free VCI films are specifically engineered to meet these rigorous German safety standards, ensuring that when your parts are unpacked in Stuttgart or Munich, they meet every safety and environmental benchmark.

Powering the Green Transition: Offshore Wind

We cannot talk about European corrosion in 2026 without looking at the North Sea. The explosion of offshore wind energy has created a unique challenge: protecting massive turbine components in high-salinity, high-humidity environments.

This is where VCI emitters for wind energy enclosures and VCI stretch film for steel coil export are proving their worth. These specialized tools allow for long-term storage and “layup” of billion-euro assets, ensuring that when a turbine is finally bolted into the seabed, its internal electronics and bearings are as pristine as the day they left the factory.

FAQ: European Compliance in 2026

Q: Does Daubert Europe provide a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) for PPWR?
A: Yes. All our sustainable VCI films come with the necessary technical documentation to support your EU circular economy reporting.

Q: Is Bionatur film compliant with the new PFAS restrictions?
A: Absolutely. Our Bionatur VCI film is both PFAS-free and nitrite-free, meeting the strict chemical safety thresholds set by REACH in early 2026.

Picture a shipping crate arriving at a facility in Hamburg after six weeks travelling by sea. The seals are broken. The client inspects the highly engineered steel components inside and spots a faint, unmistakable orange bloom along the threads. The entire batch is immediately quarantined.

This scenario plays out daily across the European manufacturing sector. Rust is not merely a cosmetic defect. It is a severe logistical bottleneck that triggers rejected shipments, expensive rework, and damaged client relationships. The solution lies in choosing the right anti-corrosion protection products from the start.

Historically, the industry’s answer was brute force. Manufacturers would submerge parts in heavy grease or thick slushing oils before export. It worked, mostly. But it created a secondary nightmare for the end-user. The receiving facility had to allocate significant manual labour to degrease, wash, and dry the components before they could even touch an assembly line.

It was an incredibly inefficient way to do business.

“Dry” Protection: Eliminating the Degreasing Bottleneck

The landscape has shifted. Today, the deployment of advanced anti-corrosion protection products is as much about streamlining logistics as it is about preserving metal. The objective is no longer simply delivering a rust-free part. The objective is delivering a part that arrives in pristine condition, ready for immediate use.

This is exactly where “dry” protection strategies have transformed industrial packaging. Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) technology replaces messy oils with smart chemistry. When a part is wrapped in specialised VCI paper or sealed in a VCI film, molecules vaporise and saturate the enclosed air space. They condense onto the metal, forming an invisible shield that halts the electrochemical reactions causing rust.

The practical benefits are immense. The vapour penetrates deep into blind holes, intricate machined threads, and complex geometries that manual oiling frequently misses. More importantly, when your customer opens the package, the vapour simply dissipates into the atmosphere. The metal is completely clean. No washing stations. No hazardous solvent disposal. Just unpack and assemble.

Advanced Liquid Barriers for Extreme Conditions

Naturally, paper and film are not the answer to every engineering challenge. If you are storing massive cast iron blocks outdoors, or shipping heavy equipment on open flatbed trailers exposed to road salt, you require a formidable physical barrier.

Modern rust preventive liquids provide this protection without reverting to the sticky mess of the past. These specific anti-corrosion protection products are engineered for precise, demanding applications. Some formulate into a dry, wax-like film that withstands severe weather but washes off easily with standard alkaline cleaners. Others are designed as dual-purpose lubricating preservatives, allowing heavy machinery to be started without stripping the protective coating first.

Safer Chemistry for European Standards

Furthermore, operating within the European market means adhering to stringent health, safety, and environmental standards. The aggressive acid baths and heavy-solvent preventatives of previous decades are rapidly becoming regulatory liabilities under REACH.

Daubert Europe’s portfolio focuses on safer, modern alternatives. This includes nitrite-free packaging and water-based, pH-neutral rust removers that can safely salvage tarnished metals without compromising worker safety or environmental compliance.

Engineering Your Packaging Strategy

Effective metal preservation is a highly specific science. It depends on the specific alloy, the intended duration of storage, and the severity of the transit route. If your current shipping programme still relies on outdated methods, you are likely losing margin to hidden inefficiencies.

It is time to stop paying for protection twice—once to put it on, and once to take it off. Upgrade to modern anti-corrosion protection products and review your packaging strategy today to ensure your components arrive exactly as they left the factory floor.

The post Modern Anti-Corrosion: Why We Stopped Greasing Everything appeared first on Daubert Europe.

You can usually tell when a shipment hasn’t been optimized for corrosion protection. It isn’t just the rust; it’s the bottleneck at the receiving dock. If your team is still spending hours degreasing parts before assembly, you are essentially paying for protection twice: once to apply it, and once to remove it.

That workflow is becoming obsolete. The modern approach to anti-corrosion treatment isn’t just about “stopping rust”—it is about how the protection integrates with your logistics. The goal is no longer just a preserved part. It is a part that arrives ready to use.

The Shift to Dry Protection

For high-volume manufacturing, the industry standard has moved decisively toward Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) technology.

It sounds complex, but the practical application is simple. The chemistry is impregnated directly into the packaging material—whether it’s our PowerShield® paper or a VCI film. Once a part is wrapped, the VCI creates a molecular barrier on the metal surface. It reaches into recessed areas that manual greasing often misses.

The real advantage, however, is the “dry” result. There is no residue. When the package is opened at the destination, the VCI molecules dissipate into the air. The component goes straight from the crate to the assembly line. For many of our automotive clients, that elimination of the washing step is worth more than the cost of the packaging itself.

When You Actually Need Liquids

Paper and film can’t solve every problem. Sometimes, the environment demands a physical shield.

If you are shipping a turbine on an open deck across the Atlantic, or storing heavy equipment outdoors for a winter, you need a barrier that withstands direct salt spray and humidity. This is where modern liquids, like the Nox-Rust® series, have evolved beyond simple oils.

These aren’t the heavy tars of the past. They are engineered films. Some dry to a hard, wax-like finish for long-term outdoor storage; others act as a dual-purpose lubricant so you can start the machine without stripping the coating. The key is selecting a liquid that provides the necessary salt-spray resistance but remains easy to remove when the time comes.

Dealing with the Damage

Occasionally, logistics fail. Inventory sits too long, or a package is breached, and you are left with corroded stock.

The knee-jerk reaction is often an acid bath. While effective at removing rust, acid is aggressive—it pits the metal and degrades surface finishes. A safer route is a pH-neutral soaking agent like Rust Revenge®. It targets iron oxide specifically, lifting the rust without etching the base metal or damaging nearby rubber seals. It turns a scrap pile back into usable inventory.

The Right Formula

Effective corrosion protection is a balance of chemistry and logistics. The “thickest” coating isn’t always the right one. The best treatment is the one that gets your product from Point A to Point B in a condition that doesn’t slow down your production line.

If you aren’t sure which method fits your current supply chain, reach out to our technical team. We can look at your metals, your shipping routes, and your storage times to engineer a solution that works.

Electrostatic discharge is one of those problems that’s easy to dismiss — until it isn’t. There’s no visible warning, no obvious sign something has gone wrong. A component looks fine, passes inspection, ships on time. And yet, somewhere down the line, it fails.

Often, ESD is the reason.

In controlled manufacturing environments, static electricity builds up far more easily than most people realise. Routine handling. Packaging materials rubbing together. Changes in humidity. None of it feels dramatic, but all of it adds up. That’s why ESD films exist — to deal with a risk that doesn’t announce itself.

Key Takeaways

ESD films are engineered to control static electricity, not simply contain products.

Ordinary plastic packaging can increase electrostatic risk rather than reduce it.

ESD films work by allowing static charges to dissipate gradually and safely.

Daubert Europe’s ESD films are built for consistency in real-world European manufacturing conditions.

So, What Exactly Are ESD Films?

Put simply, ESD films are packaging materials designed to control static electricity. Not eliminate it entirely. Not ignore it. Control it.

That distinction matters.

Standard plastic films are excellent insulators. Unfortunately, that also means they’re very good at holding static charges. When used around sensitive components, they can create the very conditions that lead to damage.

ESD films behave differently. They’re formulated so static charges don’t linger. Instead of building up and releasing suddenly, the charge moves away in a predictable, controlled manner.

You’ll often hear terms like anti-static, static dissipative, or conductive used in this context, sometimes interchangeably. In practice, ESD films sit in a carefully defined range — not so conductive that they introduce new risks, but not so insulating that static becomes trapped.

The goal isn’t dramatic. It’s stability.

How ESD Films Manage Static Electricity

Static electricity is created through contact and separation. Slide one surface across another, pull materials apart, move parts along a line — electrons shift, charges form. In dry environments especially, those charges can remain long enough to cause trouble.

ESD films interrupt that cycle.

Rather than allowing charge to accumulate, the material provides a path for it to disperse gradually. No sudden discharge. No spike. Just controlled release over time.

A helpful comparison is pressure in a sealed system. If pressure builds unchecked, failure is inevitable. Introduce a controlled release, and the system stays stable. ESD films work on that same principle, just at a microscopic level.

This behaviour is governed by surface resistivity — essentially how easily electricity can move across the material. ESD films are engineered to stay within a narrow, reliable range, ensuring they perform consistently regardless of handling or environment. For detailed technical guidance, see IEC 61340-5-1, the international standard for electrostatic control in electronics manufacturing.

Daubert Europe’s Approach to ESD Films

At Daubert Europe, ESD protection isn’t treated as a standalone feature or a marketing label. It’s part of a broader packaging philosophy focused on reducing risk without adding complexity.

The emphasis is on repeatable performance. Films that behave the same way today as they did yesterday. Materials that integrate easily into existing packaging processes. Protection that doesn’t require special instructions or additional handling steps.

In many applications, ESD control can also be combined with other packaging requirements — including moisture or corrosion protection — helping manufacturers avoid unnecessary layers, materials, or processes. More on that is available in our corrosion prevention solutions.

It’s practical engineering, not over-designed theory.

Preventing the Damage No One Sees

The challenge with ESD isn’t that it happens. It’s that you often don’t know it happened until much later. Failures appear downstream, long after packaging has been removed and processes completed.

By then, tracing the cause is difficult. Preventing it in the first place is far easier.

ESD films quietly reduce that risk. They don’t change workflows. They don’t draw attention. They simply do what they’re meant to do — manage static energy so sensitive components remain intact.

For more guidance on electrostatic discharge in electronics manufacturing, see the European Association of Electrical Engineers ESD guidelines, which cover safe handling and packaging practices.

Key Takeaways

Vapour phase rust inhibitors create an invisible protective layer on metal surfaces without leaving residue.

Ideal for long-term storage, export packaging, and sensitive precision components.

Daubert Europe offers VPRI films, bags, and papers designed for European manufacturing demands.

A residue-free, cost-effective alternative to oily or messy corrosion protection.

There’s a familiar moment in many factories and warehouses — someone unwraps a metal component that looked perfect when it left the plant, only to find a faint brown haze creeping across an edge or thread. No drama, no warning… just corrosion doing what it does best: turning small lapses into big problems. Anyone who works with metal knows that rust rarely asks permission.

This is exactly why vapour phase rust inhibitors, or VPRIs, have become such a practical favourite across Europe’s manufacturing sectors. They offer protection without fuss, without grease, without the chore of wiping things down afterwards. Just clean metal staying clean.

How Vapour Phase Rust Inhibitors Actually Work

If you haven’t used VPRI packaging before, the idea sounds almost too simple. Place your metal components inside a sealed environment — a bag, film, wrap, or paper — and the corrosion-inhibiting vapours do the rest.

These vapours drift through the space, settle gently onto exposed metal, and form a microscopic, temporary layer that blocks corrosion before it can start. There’s no sticky film, no oily residue, nothing for operators to scrub off later. You could take a part straight from VPRI packaging and install it without hesitation.

It’s the sort of protection that fits quietly into the background. And often, that’s what makes it so valuable.

A Fit for Many Different Industries

Europe’s supply chain is rarely straightforward. Components travel — sometimes much farther than expected — and every stop introduces new humidity, vibration, or temperature changes. VPRIs serve as a constant, steady buffer.

Automotive suppliers rely on them to keep precision machined parts rust-free during transit.

Aerospace firms use VPRI papers to protect high-value metal assemblies during long-term storage.

Metal stamping plants wrap components between processing stages to avoid contamination.

Exporters depend on VPRI films when shipping to regions where humidity is anything but predictable.

Add it all up, and you get a form of corrosion control that’s as versatile as it is practical.

Daubert Europe’s VPRI Range

Daubert Europe offers VPRI packaging in several formats — films for larger assemblies, bags for individual components, papers for stacked or boxed parts, and speciality options for heavy-duty applications. All are engineered to meet the expectations of European manufacturers who simply can’t afford setbacks caused by rust.

Karen Clements, Global Marketing Director for Daubert Cromwell, explains it with refreshing clarity:
“Vapour phase rust inhibitors give manufacturers something they don’t have enough of: certainty. When parts arrive looking exactly as they left the plant — clean, dry, untouched — that reliability builds confidence at every step of the supply chain.”

Why Manufacturers Are Moving Away from Oils and Grease

One of the quiet revolutions in corrosion protection has been the shift away from heavy coatings. They take time to apply, they attract dust, and they often need cleaning before assembly. VPRIs avoid all of that.

They’re cleaner. Faster. And ironically, they often provide more consistent coverage because vapours reach places that oils simply can’t.

For many operations, switching to VPRI packaging has been less a cost decision and more a workflow improvement — fewer touch-points, fewer delays, fewer unpleasant surprises.

Choose Protection That Works While You Don’t

Corrosion doesn’t sleep, but with VPRI packaging, you don’t have to worry about it either. Whether your components stay in storage for a week or a year, the protection remains in place the entire time.

Rust doesn’t announce itself. One moment a steel part gleams, the next a faint orange line spreads across its surface. It’s frustrating, costly, and sometimes catastrophic. If you work with metal components — whether in automotive, electronics, or machinery — you know that corrosion is never just cosmetic.

At Daubert Europe, we focus on prevention. Our anti-corrosion treatments are built to protect metals before problems start. Think of it as giving your parts a shield — one that works quietly, reliably, and without fuss, whether they’re stacked in a warehouse or crossing oceans in a shipping container.

Protection That Adapts to the Task

Not every component faces the same risk, and not every solution fits every situation. That’s why our products come in three main forms — each designed to match the way your metals are stored, shipped, or handled.

Vapour-Phase Inhibitor Bags

These are ingenious in their simplicity. Place a bag in an enclosed space, and it releases protective vapours that cling to the metal surfaces around it. There’s no sticky residue, no complicated setup — just a molecular shield that keeps rust away. Perfect for small parts, machinery components, or anything sitting in storage for months.

Protective Films

Sometimes, a surface needs a more visible barrier. Our films act like a second skin, blocking moisture, dust, and airborne contaminants. They’re flexible, easy to apply, and even easier to remove, leaving your parts spotless. Larger items? No problem. Gearboxes, panels, and assemblies all benefit.

Anti-Corrosion Liquids

When you need total coverage, liquids do the job. Every nook, every hidden edge, coated and protected. They’re ideal for intricate components that face challenging environments or long-term storage, giving peace of mind that the metal beneath is safe and sound.

Why Choose Daubert Europe?

Here’s the thing: you can’t control every condition your parts face. Temperature swings, humidity, time on the shelf — all of it adds up. But with the right anti-corrosion treatment, you can control the outcome. Our products are trusted across Europe by industries where failure isn’t an option.

They’re effective, easy to use, and designed with environmental awareness in mind. Many of our films and bags are recyclable, and our liquids are formulated to reduce waste without compromising protection.

Prevention is Better Than Repair

Waiting until corrosion appears is like waiting for a leak to flood your basement. The damage is done before you notice it. Prevention costs less, saves time, and keeps your operations running smoothly. Integrating Daubert Europe’s anti-corrosion treatments into your workflow isn’t just practical — it’s smart business.

Find the Right Anti-Corrosion Solution

Every environment has its own challenges. Maybe it’s salty air near the coast, fluctuating warehouse conditions, or extended storage periods. Whatever the scenario, there’s a Daubert Europe product that fits.

Discover our full range at DaubertEurope.eu, and for industry guidance on corrosion prevention, the European Federation of Corrosion
is an excellent resource.

Rust may be inevitable if you ignore it — but it doesn’t have to be. With Daubert Europe’s anti-corrosion treatment, your metals stay protected, your parts stay reliable, and you can focus on what matters most: making your products perform, every time.

New to “Sustainable Series” of Industrial Packaging

July 2023
For Immediate Release

Extensive testing has proven that Daubert Europe’s new VCI packaging film containing a minimum 30% recycled content provides best corrosion protection for metals during storage and shipment. It also meets certain EU mandates as a non-taxable plastic.

Typically, adding recycled content diminishes the efficacy of VCI films. Premium Metal-Guard® RC, however, is shown to meet environmental requirements without compromising performance as a corrosion inhibitor packaging product.

Safe, effective, and now available in Europe, it combines Daubert Cromwell’s proprietary multi-metal VCI chemistry with recycled material to produce an internationally compliant film having exceptional corrosion inhibitor properties for metal parts in all stages of storage and transit.

“The push for sustainable packaging is gaining significant traction in the EU,” said Dr. Jonathan Brekan, Vice President Technology. “Premium Metal-Guard RC helps European markets achieve sustainability mandates with VCI packaging that meets targets for low-carbon footprint, recyclability, low-toxicity. We help them meet their own environmental goals without sacrificing quality.”

“Side-by-side testing of VCI films with and without recycled content showed nearly identical physical strength and performance metrics”, Dr. Brekan continued. Premium Metal-Guard RC compared similarly in tear strength, tensile, elongation, plus corrosion protection.

“Mechanically recycled polyethylene will bring dyes, additives and other contaminates with it, he explained. “These additives and contaminates can adversely affect the performance of VCI chemistries. We deliberately designed our film to achieve both excellent physical and corrosion prevention performance.”

Over the past few years, defining “sustainability” for industrial packaging became a global project for Dr. Brekan and his team of ISO accredited R&D labs. They looked to:

Understand how Daubert Cromwell could be a good corporate citizen by following practices to reduce, reuse and recycle in its own production processes, and;

Support customers with VCI products that meet their own sustainability goals.

The resulting Sustainability Series, now including Premium Metal-Guard RC film, is a collection of effective, environmentally friendly, TRGS615 and 900, REACH and RoHS compliant VCI packaging. Choices include VCI papers that meet Europe’s specific requirements for transporting metals and machinery; a non-acidic rust removing liquid that is approved and available in Europe; nitrite-free, amine-free, and plant-based poly films.
