BioNatur® Biodegradable VCI Film Technology
Daubert Europe’s VCI films featuring BioNatur® technology represent an advancement in sustainable industrial packaging. Formulated to address real-world commercial disposal streams, these low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films are engineered to biodegrade in anaerobic conditions—such as municipal landfills—while maintaining physical compatibility with standard mechanical recycling streams.
Unlike traditional biopolymers, BioNatur® films require no material segregation. They can be introduced directly into existing low-density polyethylene (LDPE) recycling infrastructure alongside standard films.
When disposed of in a managed landfill environment, the integrated organic additive attracts naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria. These microorganisms process the polymer matrix, breaking it down into natural elements.
- Material Integrity & Shelf Life: Unlike some compostable alternatives that degrade prematurely during storage, BioNatur® VCI films remain chemically stable during use. The active biodegradation process is triggered exclusively upon burial in an active anaerobic environment.
- Hydrocarbon Breakdown Verification: Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon testing has demonstrated that the structural material undergoes microbially driven degradation into organic compounds, rather than fragmenting into persistent synthetic microplastics.
- Streamlined Waste Management: Eliminates the requirement for specialized industrial composting polymers or complex sorting mechanisms, reducing administrative waste management burdens.
- Faster Breakdown: Formulated to decompose at an accelerated rate compared to standard polyethylene packaging materials, which can persist in environments for centuries.
BioNatur® technology has been rigorously tested to conform with international testing frameworks and satisfies the essential criteria of the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste:
- ASTM D5511 (Anaerobic Biodegradation): Independent laboratory testing under high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions demonstrated up to 99.7% biodegradation within 1,697 days.
- ASTM D5526 (Real-World Landfill Simulation): Accelerated testing under simulated landfill pressures demonstrated up to 36.6% biodegradation within 391 days.
(Note: Actual rates of biodegradation will vary depending on specific localized environmental conditions and active microbial presence within the disposal facility.)
